Rey Mysterio is one of the most popular and successful WWE Superstars of the Ruthless Aggression era. While he started off as a cruiserweight fighter, his incredible in ring ability and immense popularity among the fans eventually led him to fight against the heavyweights and eventually become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The legend from San Diego has been a professional wrestler for many years and recently, Brock Lesnar’ attack on him and his son Dominic was a major storyline on Monday night Raw. Because of his diminutive stature, Rey Mysterio was loved by the fans. His lovable personality and incredible high flying moves in the ring made him extremely popular with the fans. For over three decades, Rey Mysterio has been a phenomenal pro wrestler and fans just love him and his family. His career has featured some of the most exciting matches in wrestling history. He has delivered numerous classic matches during his career in the WWE and WCW and in this post, we will take a look at some of Mysterio’s very best moments in the squared circle. Let’s get started.
Here are the best matches of Rey Mysterio’s Career
Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero (Halloween Havoc 1997)
Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero were quite popular in the 90s and in 1997, they both had a strong momentum and push. Mysterio was the underdog baby face while Guerrero was the heel.
Halloween Havoc 1997 saw them facing off in a Mask vs Championship match. Mysterio once again defended the rights to his mask (as you read further, you will find out that this is sort of a trend for a lot of Mysterio’s best matches), winning the Cruiserweight Championship in a true classic.
Rey Mysterio And Billy Kidman Vs Charlie Haas And Shelton Benjamin (Vengeance 2003)
The run of Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman together as a tag team led to a lot of underrated matches. Billy Kidman and Rey Mysterio were much more successful as a duo in the WCW than the WWE but they did have a fantastic outing in a WWE Tag Team Championship match against the young and upcoming superstars Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.
The crowd was red-hot for Mysterio and Kidman every time they came close to winning. Haas and Benjamin eventually stole the victory, but it remains a classic in Mysterio’s career, and yet another great example of him putting young wrestlers over, instead of burying them unlike a few WWE Superstars are (in)famous for doing.
Rey Mysterio Vs. John Morrison (SmackDown September 4, 2009)
Rey Mysterio fought tremendously with John Morrison for the Intercontinental Championship during an episode of SmackDown. The match could be considered the best match of Morrison’s career and sneaks into the best ten for Mysterio as well.
This Intercontinental Title bout featured two of the very best in ring performers in WWE history and it lived up to the massive expectations. Mysterio put over Morrison to give him the huge win. WWE trusted Mysterio in the role and he certainly did his job, making Morrison look like a million bucks in this instant classic.
Rey Mysterio Vs Psychosis (Bash At The Beach 1996)
Psychosis is arguably the most underrated rival of Rey Mysterio’s career. These lucha legends had a great rivalry throughout the 90s in the AAA, ECW and WCW. The 1996 Bash at the Beach pay per view is remembered for the Hulk Hogan heel turn when the “Real American” joined the New World Order. That might have been the biggest moment of the night but the best match was definitely Mysterio vs Psychosis.
The two lucha legends tore it up in the opener with fans enjoying every single move they delivered throughout. The big win for Mysterio gave him more momentum as the new face of the cruiserweight division, even without the title.
Rey Mysterio Vs Randy Orton Vs Kurt Angle (WrestleMania 22)
The biggest win of Rey Mysterio’s career was inevitably going to make the list. Mysterio won the Royal Rumble match in 2006, moving on to the WrestleMania 22 World Championship match against Kurt Angle and Randy Orton in the triple threat.
The match was a bit short, which prevented it from ranking higher on the list, but it was full of non-stop action. Rey Mysterio overcame extreme odds and managed to capture the World Heavyweight Championship from the fabled Kurt Angle and went on to emotionally dedicate it to Eddie Guerrero, the WWE legend who had passed away because of heart failure recently.
Rey Mysterio Vs Dean Malenko (Great American Bash 1996)
WCW’s cruiserweight division created great matches that stole the show almost every single PPV. Fans were tuning in for the legends in the main event picture, but the matches of performers like Dean Malenko and Rey Mysterio gave them their money’s worth every single time.
Malenko and Mysterio had their best overall match at the Great American Bash 1996 event. The Cruiserweight Championship match would see Malenko retain, but Mysterio won over the fans with his incredible performance to continue building his momentum.
Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero (SummerSlam 2005)
The rivalry between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero created fantastic matches over the course of their time together in both WCW and WWE. Dominic Mysterio recently appearing on WWE television gives us another reason to call back this classic match.
The storyline was a bit odd, with Eddie claiming he was the birth father of Dominic and the parental rights being determined in a ladder match. Mysterio was at his best as a face and the same went for Guerrero as a heel in this classic. The match was also infamous for the interference by Eddie Guerrero’s wife Vickie Guerrero.
Rey Mysterio Vs. CM Punk (Over The Limit 2010)
CM Punk and Rey Mysterio had a tremendous feud in 2010, during the Straight Edge Society era of Punk’s character. Mysterio became his target as Punk wanted to unmask him.
The incredible storyline climaxed at Over the Limit 2010. As it can be expected from performers of such a high calibre, the fight was exceptional. There was more on the line than just a win or a loss. CM Punk staked his hair against Rey Mysterio’s mask. Mysterio went on to win the match and shaved Punk’s head.
Rey Mysterio Vs. Chris Jericho (The Bash 2009)
Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho were two of the brightest young superstars in the WCW before moving into the WWE. Any pro wrestling fan worth his/her salt will know that these two are among the most legendary in ring performers of all time and share incredible chemistry together. WWE would see them both become legends, as they somehow topped their prior matches against each other in 2009.
Much like the CM Punk feud, Jericho was obsessed with unmasking Punk during the serious heel character run. The two were feuding over the Intercontinental Championship, which brought the belt back to relevance once again. This was another match where Rey Mysterio would’ve been forced to unmask himself if he lost to Jericho. However, he managed to beat Jericho with his trademark “619” finisher and successfully kept his mask on and hoisted the Intercontinental Championship as well. It was a clash of the titans which lived up to its billing.
Rey Mysterio And Edge Vs Kurt Angle And Chris Benoit (No Mercy 2002)
Just reading the names of the people involved in this bout is enough to get any pro wrestling fan excited. All the four participants of the tag team match are some of the very best wrestlers to have ever stepped into the ring. The brand split in 2002 featured the creation of new titles, so both Raw and Smackdown had belts to compete for. Rey Mysterio and Edge vs Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit was a bout that was meant to decide the winner of the WWE Tag Team Champions on SmackDown. was the end of a tournament to crown the WWE Tag Team Champions on the SmackDown side of things, taking place at No Mercy 2003.
All four stars stole the show with a must-see tag team match that made the titles relevant right away. Mysterio and Edge played the perfect babyface team, delivering impressive tandem moves. They fell just short to the heel duo of technical wrestlers in one of the all-time great WWE tag matches. Midway through the match, Benoit climbed the top rope and attempted a diving headbutt on Edge but Edge avoided the move and tagged Mysterio. Mysterio ran into the ring and used his quick speed, knocking Angle off the ring apron and then Mysterio dropkicked Benoit in the face. Mysterio followed by Droppin Da’ Dime on Benoit. Benoit applied the Crippler Crossface on Mysterio but Mysterio escaped the hold by slamming Benoit into the middle rope and attempted a 619 but Benoit countered. Edge attacked Benoit and Mysterio attempted to pin, but Benoit kicked out. Later, Edge attacked Benoit in the corner and Mysterio performed a bronco buster on Benoit. Edge performed a hurricanrana on Angle. Benoit attempted a diving headbutt on Edge but Edge avoided the move and Angle received it. Edge took advantage and pinned Angle for a near-fall. Mysterio entered the ring and kicked Angle in the face. Benoit applied a Crippler Crossface on Edge from behind but Edge knocked Benoit out of the ring and tossed Mysterio onto Benoit outside the ring. Angle attempted to apply an ankle lock on Edge, but Edge countered it and applied the ankle lock on Angle instead. Angle countered the hold and applied his own ankle lock on Edge, making him submit. As a result, Angle and Benoit became the first-ever Tag Team Champions. The match was later named Match of the Year by Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
